Tournament favorites India will join England of the final of the ICC Champions Trophy 2013after beating Sri Lanka by 8 wickets in Cardiff. Sri Lanka, like South Africa yesterday against England, were never in the match, and were under pressure from the 3rd over when they lost their first wicket in difficult batting conditions.
MS Dhoni won a good toss, and invited Sri Lanka to bat first. There was plenty of movement on offer for the bowlers, the Indian bowlers capitalized well on this. Captain Angelo Matthews finally showed some form with the bat, with a well-played fifty to keep the innings together, the irony being that the rest of the batting line-up failed. Matthews had some support from Jayawardene (38 from 63), taking the team to a below par 181/8 from their 50 overs. Ishant Sharma was virtually unplayable, taking 3/33 from his 9 overs, but it was Kumar who started the collapse and put the brakes on bowling his 9 overs for just 18 runs. Ravi Ashwin finished off the tail with 3/48.
The opening pair of Sharma and Dhawan delighted the crowd with another excellent partnership of 77 before Sharma was bowled by Matthews for 33 from 50 balls, he never really looked comfortable at the crease. Dhawan and Kohli put on a 2nd wicket partnership worth 65 to take India close to victory before Dhawan was stumped by Sangakkara off the bowling of Mendis for 68 from 92 balls, continuing his terrific form in the tournament. Kohli, with plenty of time on his hand, managed to play himself back into form, which spell danger for England in the final. He was the not out batsmen with 58 from just 64 balls. Lasith Malinga failed to make any kind of impression on the Indian batting line-up, bowling 8 over for 54 runs. India passed he target with 90 balls remaining, proving their dominance in the match.
