The third day of the third Ashes Test match played at Old Trafford in Manchester was again dominated by Australia, despite a brilliant century scored by Kevin Pietersen.
England resumed the day on 52/2, having lost the wicket of Root and night watchmen Bresnan, thanks to two late strikes on day two by Peter Siddle. Trott never really settled, and was the first wicket to fall on day three, when he was caught in the slips by Clarke off the bowling of Harris for 5 off 32 balls. Pietersen started out looking very fragile, playing and missing at several deliveries. He did however get into his stride, and dominated the Australian attack, in particular the spin of Nathan Lyon, which he attacked with relative ease. Cook fell for 62, when he was unlucky to be caught down the leg side, Haddin taking and excellent catch.
Pietersen and Bell continued the replay, Bell looking to continue with his good form of late. He reached his fifty off 93 balls but didn’t last much long when he was caught on the crease by a Harris delivery, and was comprehensively bowled for 60. Pietersen went on to score his 23rd test century, a well-deserved feat. Starc managed to pick up two very important wickets late in the day, when he dismissed both Pietersen and Bairstow to rock England back, at 280/7.
Prior and Broad batted out the remaining over, with relative ease, and Australia will have to again bowl well, if they don’t want to see the England tail wagging. England still trail by 233 runs with 3 wicket still intact. The home side will be disappointed with their batting performance, with the pitch offering very little to the bowlers, a top six of their quality should’ve done better.
