Australia dominated the opening day of the 5th Investec Ashes test match played at the Kennington Oval in London. It was the bat of Shane Watson that did most of the damage, scoring his highest test score, perhaps just in time for his career, taking his side to 307/4.

Michael Clarke won the toss for Australia, electing to bat first. James Faulkner made his debut for Australia, while England left out Bairstow and Bresnan, bringing in two debutants of their own in Kerrigan and Woakes. The home side got off to the perfect start, when Anderson dismissed the dangerous Warner in the 5th over for just 6.
Rogers and Watson fought back well, putting on a 2nd wicket partnership worth 107 runs, of which Watson did the bulk of the scoring at a decent rate, with Rogers making sure to just keep his wicket intact. Rogers and Clarke were dismissed in close succession, leaving the Australian on 144/3 in the 43rd over, looking down the barrel once more.
It was left to Watson and Smith to recue things for the tourists putting on a spectacular 145 runs partnership, showing some good maturity along the way. Watson reached his 100 off just 114 balls, and went on to pass the 150 mark of 194 balls, slowing down considerably in the second part of his innings. The likes of Watson and Smith were particularly severe on the debutants Woakes and Kerrigan, taking advantage of their first game nerves. Watson was eventually dismissed with his score on 176, when he ws brilliant caught by Pietersen off the bowling of Broad.
Night watchmen Peter Siddle ended the day off 2ith 18*, with him at the crease was Steven Smith on 66*, who will be hoping to get to his first test century on day 2 of the test.
