Honors will perhaps go to India after the first day of the first test against South Africa at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg. After taking a 3-0 drubbing in the ODI series, many expected them to just roll over on the test series, but they showed good character and fight.

MS Dhoni won and important toss, and had no hesitation in electing to bat first. Dhawan and Vijay got off to a painfully slow start, before Dhawan finally succumbed to a short delivery from Dale Steyn in the 9th over with his score on 13. His opening partner Vijay was not far behind, dismissed by Morkel in the 16th over for 6 off 42 balls. India were on the back foot with the score on 24/2, but Pujara and Kohli consolidated well, to take India into lunch with the score on 70/2.

The post lunch session saw Kohli in sublime form, going to his fifty off 76 balls. Together with Pujara they put on an 89 runs partnership before Pujara was run out with his score on 25, after a huge misunderstanding with Kohli. Rohit Sharma lost his wicket before tea, throwing away a patient start when he sparred at a wide delivery only to be caught by de Villiers, good piece of bowling by Philander. India going into tea with the score on 164/4.

Kohli went to yet another test century after tea, off 140 balls, which included 16 magnificently struck boundaries. Unfortunately he lost his concentration later in the session when he hauled out to mid-off with his score on 119. Dhoni and Rahana saw out the rest of the day, playing through a difficult 10 over period against the new ball to end the day on 255/5.
