Pakistan will take on Sri Lanka in the opening match of the Asia Cup 2013/4 which will be played at the Khan Sheheb Osman Ali Stadium in Fatullah on Tuesday. The two sides last met in December last year in a closely contested ODI series, which Pakistan won 3-2. On a neutral venue once more, the sides weigh up well, and another close match is expected.
Pakistan has the stronger looking bowling line-up of the two sides, with the experience of Umar Gul expected to return to the starting line-up. One feel the death bowling between himself and Lasith Malinga will be one of the deciding factors between the two sides. The spin bowling of Saeed Ajmal and Shahid Afridi will play a huge role, the former suffered at the hands of the Sri Lankan batsman in the last test series between the sides, and he will have plenty of motivation to prove his worth. Misbah-ul-Haq will as per normal be the rock that will have to keep an inexperienced batting line-up together. Ahmed Shehzad has proven in the past that he is able to play the big innings, if he can replicate this, the pressure will be off the lower order, and allow them to play their natural game.
Sri Lanka have the security of both Jayawardene and Sanagakkara in the batting order, a luxury that will give any batting the edge in the slow conditions. Sri Lanka will be expected to field a side with two spinner, and Senanayake and Mendis are expected to get the nods. They are very effective in the conditions, and more importantly, they are both wicket takers.
With all the facts measured, one will not be able to separate the two sides, and it will be the odd individual performance that will secure the win for either side.
